TMSA’s Cybersecurity Team, the Cyber-Tigers, is off to a Great Start in Their First Year!

Cary, North Carolina- Triangle Math and Science Academy announced its successful participation in the 1st round of the CyberPatriot VII, a National Youth Cyber Defense Competition for 2014-15 season. TMSA middle-school students competed in the Middle School division against 190 registered middle school teams across the country. These outstanding students placed 2nd in North Carolina and 18th across the nation.

CyberPatriot VII is an intensive competition which requires students to spend 6 consecutive hours hardening two images of operating systems, Windows 2008 server and Windows 7 Pro. During last week’s competition, TMSA students resolved an impressive 29 out of 34 security issues on those machines and gained 157 points out of 200 points.

CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air Force Association to inspire high school and middle school students toward careers in cyber security or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future.

The program features an annual online and in-person competition, in which teams across the United States and Canada, as well as from Department of Defense Dependent Schools abroad, compete in a series of online rounds for a chance to earn an all-expenses-paid trip to the CyberPatriot National Finals Competition in Washington, D.C. in the spring. In D.C., students have the opportunity to win scholarships and network with industry leaders.

Maryam Abkar, an eighth-grade, Cyber Tigers competitor describes her experience in Cyber Tigers:

“Cyber Patriot has been an eye-opening experience for me. Before I joined, I had previously messed around with technology briefly. I learned and ran Linux Distributions and started learning the programming language, Python. I had never once considered learning computer security, deeming it boring and overrated before I had ever touched it. Once I did go into through the Cyber Security Club, I was instantly hooked! I realized, finally, what Cyber Security actually was. It was defending people and fighting attackers. I tell my friends and everybody I know about what I am learning.”

Congratulations to Eric Zhang, Aayush Patel, Maryam Abkar, Bram Lovelace, Farren Evans, Saketh Ruddarraju, Amber Peart ,Tanay Bali, Malcolm Kemp, Mustafa Muhammed, Adam Rouzky, and Firdaws Bounagui. Keep up the great work, Cyber Tigers!
